Coach James Ivy honored last week at Indian Stadium
Former Sanger head football coach James Ivy was honored last week before the Indians vs. Aubrey varsity scrimmage at Indian Stadium.
Ivy coached at Sanger from 1989-2001 and the Indians made the playoffs 7 times (most of these years only 2 teams made the playoffs) and won three district championships. He built a program of hard-nosed kids. “We were tough on them, but they knew we had to work harder than everyone else.” All the players were involved in track, if they wanted to play football. SHS won numerous district championships in track, as well.
He said the 13 years he was in Sanger were some of the most enjoyable years for them. “I think the world of all those kids. I am always proud to see the men they have become. They’ve made good careers and raising families now.”
Three of his former players Jarrod Roberts, Jesse Hunter and Bruce Elsey are current SISD school board members.
Sanger head football coach Chad Rogers organized the special presentation since Coach Ivy’s son Keith is the head football coach at Aubrey High School. “It just made sense to honor James Ivy,” said Rodgers.
