The meteorologist accurately predicted the winter storm that blanketed Sanger with sleet and snow this past weekend, causing temperatures to plummet into the single digits. From Saturday through Monday, the area resembled a ghost town as most residents stayed off the slick streets. Many businesses were closed, but Tom Thumb, Dollar General, Sportsman, Sportsman 2, Pit Stop, and Quick Trip remained open.
By Tuesday afternoon, most restaurants had reopened as temperatures finally rose above freezing. However, the streets remained problematic on Wednesday morning as the melted ice froze again on heavily traveled roads and not much relief on untreated side streets. Sanger ISD was closed on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday because of the hazardous conditions.
Residents made the best of the storm, as shown in pictures throughout this newspaper. They found creative ways to sled and have fun.
The City of Sanger and CoServ electric crews deserve commendation for keeping electricity running through the storm, working overtime to ensure homes and businesses stayed warm. Cleanup from the wintery mix will take some time, as the ice takes a while to melt.
