Mike Picha hired as Sanger ISD Director of Safety and Security

Sanger ISD trustees unanimously approved the hire of Mr. Mike Picha as the district’s new Director of Safety and Security at a board meeting on Friday, Sept. 30.

The hiring of Mr. Picha is the first step in Sanger ISD creating its own police department. Once the district’s police department is officially recognized, Mr. Picha will be sworn in as the Sanger ISD Chief of Police.

Mr. Picha has spent the past seven years as the Director of Public Safety at Wise Health System in Decatur. He has over 20 years of experience in law enforcement. Mike Picha

Prior to Wise Health System, Mr. Picha served as a Public Safety Patrol Sergeant/Second in Command at the City of Decatur Police Department from 2006-2015. During his tenure, he was frequently appointed by the Chief of Police as acting Chief and executive in his absence.

Mr. Picha earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. He received his Master of Criminal Justice from Tarleton State University. In addition, Mr. Picha is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.

Sanger ISD Superintendent said at the beginning of this school year that he wanted to assure families that Safety remains a top priority at Sanger ISD, in light of the tragedy in Ulvalde, Texas. “This summer, we worked closely with our local first responders, the City of Sanger, and throughout the year we will meet to address the safety and security needs of our school district.”

Sanger ISD will have all teachers teaching behind locked doors and Security Vestibules will be added to Sanger Middle School and the Sixth Grade Campus. All the other campuses already have Security Vestibules. It is a space that provides security by using two or more doors at the front entrance, with each door able to operate independently, and that permits an administrator or officer to observe those who pass through the space.
