Meals on Wheels returns to Sanger five days a week

SPAN, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation which has been serving Denton County seniors, persons with disabilities, and veterans with nutrition and transportation services since 1974. [SPAN is an acronym for Special Programs for Aging Needs, the organization’s original name.] They operate as two working divisions – Meals on Wheels of Denton County and SPAN Transit.

“At Meals on Wheels of Denton County, we are working to eliminate food insecurity among Denton County seniors by providing a hot lunch meal daily, Monday through Friday. For those who are age 60+, meals are provided at no cost,” said Don Hankinson, Program Site Liaison for SPAN, Inc. / Meals.

Since the onset of the present health emergency, they have been serving the Sanger area home-delivered meal clients with a weekly delivery containing five frozen meals. They have recently resumed the traditional service, consisting of a hot lunch meal delivered daily Monday thru Friday. Also, they have resumed operating the meal service from the Sullivan Senior on Bolivar Street in Sanger.

Seniors who are homebound because of physical or emotional disabilities receive meals delivered to them at their homes. For those who are out-and-about, they serve a congregate meal at the Sullivan Senior Center - 200 Bolivar Street in Sanger. To be eligible for either program, participants must be 60 years old and complete a nutrition needs assessment.

To request home-delivered meal service for Denton County residents, call the Meals on Wheels office at 940 382 2224. To enroll for congregate meals, stop by and visit with site manager Julie Stephens at the Sullivan Center; Monday through Fridays, 10:00am until noon.

“This month, our volunteers will serve approximately 11,000 meals to more than 500 of our friends, neighbors, and family members here in Denton County. As you could imagine, this requires a small army of volunteers,” added Hankinson. They are always looking for additional volunteers. See the volunteer flyer to the right:
