City and School Board General Elections announced



The annual City and School Board General Election will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024 to elect a Mayor (Thomas Muir) and Councilmembers for Place 2 (Gary Bilyeu) and Place 4 (Allen Chick) for a two-year term.   Places 2 (Ann Marie Afflerbach) and Place 3 (Sarah York) are up for School Board. Muir confirmed through via text to the Sanger News this week he is filing for another 2-year term. 

Filing Period for City:

Applications will be available for pick-up for filing for a place on the ballot at Sanger City Hall, 502 Elm Street, Sanger, Texas. The first day to file for a place on ballot was January 17, 2024 at 7:30 AM. The last day to File for a place on the ballot is February 16, 2024 by 5:00 PM. City Hall regular office hours are Monday - Thursday 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM and Friday 7:30 AM - 11:00 AM.  The City Secretary's Office will be open until 5:00 PM on February 16, 2024. The location of next Election will be at Sanger Community Center – 101 Freese Street, Sanger, Texas 76262.

City of Sanger City Council Elected Officials and Terms:

The City Council consists of a Mayor and five Council Members, all of whom are elected at large. Positions are numbered one through five consecutively. The terms of the Mayor and Council members shall be for two years. The Mayor and Council Places 2 and 4, shall be elected in even numbered years, and Council Places 1, 3, and 5 shall be elected in odd numbered years. Regular City Council Meetings are on the first and third Monday of every month, unless the meeting falls on a holiday which then moves the meeting to Tuesday. Qualifications / Eligibility to File for City:

City of Sanger Home Rule Charter Section 3.04 Code of Ordinances; Each candidate for an elective office shall meet the following qualifications:

• Be a qualified voter

• Be 21 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable

• Must have resided in the State for twelve months and within the City limits for twelve months immediately preceding the date of the regular filing deadline for a candidate’s application for a place on the ballot

• Shall not be employed by the City

• Shall meet all other eligibility requirements of the Texas Election Code


Sanger ISD Board of Trustees Information:

The Sanger ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven Board Members elected to serve, without compensation,  for overlapping terms of three years each.

Due to HB 1, School District elections must be held in conjunction with either the city or the county.

While candidates run for specific places, they represent Sanger ISD at large.

Following the annual election, an Election of Board Officers of Board Officers (President, Vice-President, and Secretary) by a vote of the Trustees is conducted.

Requirements to Hold  SISD Office:

Be a qualified (registered) voter [Educ. Code 11.061(b)]; Take the official oath of office [Educ. Code 11.061(a)]; Serve without compensation [Educ. Code 11.061(d)]; Have been a continuous resident of the state for twelve months and a resident of the district for six months prior to the last date a candidate may file to be listed on the ballot [Election Code 141.001(a)(5)].

SISD Application Procedures:

Any individual who meets the requirements to hold office may pick up a filing packet from the Sanger ISD Superintendent’s Office at 601 Elm Street, Sanger, Texas 76266.

Applications must be signed, notarized, and state the place for which the applicant is a candidate (i.e., Place 2, Place 3, ...). All applications filed are public records and open to inspection upon request.  Completed applications must be filed at the Sanger ISD Superintendent’s Office. • Call for Election by Board of Trustees at Regular School Board Meeting: January 22, 2024

• First Day to File for a Place on the General Election Ballot: January 17, 2024

• Last Day to File for a Place on the General Election Ballot: February 16, 2024

• Order of Ballot drawing - February 19, 2024

• Early voting - TBA

• Election Day - Saturday, May 4, 2024
